Making disciples with love to God and others

Methodists love to cook and eat

A “few” years ago, Tyler Church held an annual turkey dinner at this time of the year. It became so famous, people had to take a number to be called in to eat. Just about all church members pitched in one way or another – from turkey roasting, making desserts and all the trimmings. This money was turned into the church as we were paying for the addition and other expenses. This project got so big that we decided to stop – one reason: helpers were getting older.

Now as you know, Methodists love to cook and EAT.

In recent years, we have had different groups publishing cookbooks.

Mary-Martha Circle
put out “From Our Kitchen to Yours” in 1982. The Youth Group had “Heavenly Dishes” and in 2003, “Feeding the Flock” from church members. Recently, Pastor Groves had a cookbook turned in: “Cook Book for the Thrifty Housewife” by the Tyler Memorial United Bretheren Church. There was no date, but I estimate the date during the Great Depression – as some of the advertisements list Ross County National Bank, that was closed. There were others listed as no longer around, such as Saulo, Sulzer’s Grocery, McVickers, Armstrong, Richardson Motor Company, Wissler Bottling Works, and many others.

I have a World War II cookbook put out in the days of rationing. Many young people living here today have never heard of these places, but perhaps their grandparents know of them and remember their location downtown.

This is a time of helping others and doing all to support of church and our families. We have had bad times and good times, but food, friendship, and love have maintained our wonderful Tyler Church and we pray this will continue.

Recently, I was given a recipe for “Slumgolian” – a cheap and easy recipe. I tried it, and it was good – especially for a tight budget. Here it is in case anyone wants to give it a try:

½  lb. bologna – cut up & fry together

1 onion

Cook rotini or another type of pasta – I used

elbow macaroni – drain

1 can stewed or chopped tomatoes

Cook pasta until tender, drain, and add fried

mixture – mix well and add tomatoes.

Could put about 6 slices of cheese on top and

bake a short time at 350o I just cooked on

stovetop.
