Church Library Classification

Here is the classification used in our church library.  I hope this will make your finding the book you want to read easier.  The classifications start on your left as you walk into the library, from the top shelf down the first section bookcase then continues to the second section of bookcases top to bottom and so forth.

  1. Bible – different translations.

  2. Bibles – books about the Bible, Parts of the Bible, Topics of the Bible, & History of translations.

  3. Bible – Old Testament only

  4. Bible – New Testament only (like the Good News Bible, etc)

  5. Jesus Christ

  6. Philosophy, Psychology

  7. Christian Beliefs – creeds, special doctrine, God, man, faith, salvation, death, ethics, etc.

  8. Devotional, Prayer, & Sermons

  9. Christian Living

  10. Reference

  11. Christian Family Living – family worship, devotions, & prayers

  1. Education for Parenthood

  2. Music & Art

  3. Mission & Evangelism

  4. Maturing, Morality – Christian Sex Education for all ages

  1. Church History

  2. United Methodism

  3. Other Religious & Denominations

  4. Socio-Economic Problems – race citizenship, politics, labor, alcoholism, etc.

  1. Recreation & Useful Arts

  2. Literature – poetry, drama, essays, etc.

  3. Autobiography, Biography

  4. Fiction

  5. Non-fiction

  6. Christian Education – teacher & leadership resources

  1. Retirement Years

  2. The Church Building

  3. Holidays

This seems to be a good system that was in place long before I came around.  The one drawback seems to be that the determination of each books placement in the classification is up to the Librarian (namely, me – at this time).  So, if you get a book, and after reading it you think it belongs in a different classification let me know!  And some of the classifications overlap, too; for instance, a devotional could be in 8 or 11.  If you have suggestions on improving this, let me know that, too!

  --Respectfully, Faye J.
