Some Tyler History By Lucy Merril & Peggy Elam

Tyler Churches Boy Scouts

Several years ago – when my brother Larry was in school our parents were Cub Masters and then Scout Masters. Those boys are all grown, married and are fine young men. I remember some of the crafts and projects that started in our house. Some years later, Bob my husband became involved with the scouts and the best thing happened. He had tried to stop smoking and all of my nagging wouldn’t work. Finally the Scouts and the leader invited him to the Order of the Arrow ceremony and he decided he would attend. That was the end of his smoking and that made me very happy. He also got his Order of the Arrow. This is a high ranking importance in scouting.

I have received this information from Peggy Elam as Mike had provided much leadership:

Tyler Scouts in the 70’s and 80’s

Tyler had a great group of Scouts during the 70’s and through 2000. In the 70’s the leadership was under Everett Smith and Walter Ott. In the 80’s through 2000 – leadership was provided by Mike Elam, Dennis Murphy, Pat McConahy, Jim Bryan and Brian Moore.

There were around 300 young men over that 30 year period that were served by this troop. Several area schools were represented here: Adena, Chillicothe, Huntington, Paint Valley, Southeastern and Unioto.

These young men were very active, going camping, selling Christmas trees and earning badges. Tyler and Troop 8 had many Eagle Scouts during this time.

The Eagles were: Burdett King, James Hupp, Eric Frances, Greg Haynes, David Ott, Mike Elam II, Richard Harper, Heath McDonald, Pat McCarty, Eric Cousins, Drew Patterson, Jamie Bryans, Shawn Sullivan, Michael Murphy, James Bryan, Walter Ott, John True, Todd Wilson, Jonathan Moore, and Chad Wilson.

Our present Scout Leader is Mr. Harold Ringhiser and the Cub Scout Leader is Mike Henry.

Also June Dempsey’s son Bill who has been looking for a job is now in Scouting soon to be in North Carolina.

We all should support the scouts – they will be our future.
