Tyler History: Cornerstones Through the Years By L. Merrill

Recently, our church choir sang the hymn, “The Cornerstone”. We have two cornerstones in our church building.

As you know our church rented the building with Rev. Tyler as pastor. That was May 30, 1907. Then a lot was purchased for $1950 on the southeast corner of Church at Mill Street. March 14, 1915, the new church had groundbreaking.

The architect of this building was Mr. John Swertzer – grandfather of our Brad Purdum. This cornerstone was laid September 19, 1915. The new church opened and dedicated free of debt with membership of 105.

As time passed, the need for more room for classes was made aware due to crowded Sunday School rooms. On May 1946, the lot facing Mill St.was purchased with groundbreaking on July 7, 1957. On November 10th, the cornerstone for the new educational addition was laid. Pastor Lloyd Tuttle was our minister.

How many of you remember these events? I do not remember the first cornerstone, but I do remember the last one. These houses of the Lord have much meaning to all of us. Do you ever look at them when entering or passing by the church? I do not know what may have been placed in these cornerstones. It may be listed somewhere in church records.

The important thing is that many have come to serve and hopefully many more will do the same.

Note: When the builders completed the addition, it was stated that another floor could be added. I ask all of us what has happened to our congregation?
